Oxford Down

Minority

This was where it all started with a gift of an Oxford Down fleece from The Chiltern Open Air Museum!

The Oxford Down breed originates in the 1830's after crossing Oxford Rams with Hampshire Down and Southdown ewes. As the breed stabilised over several decades and as most flocks were around the town of Witney , Oxfordshire, the name Oxford Down was adopted.

The Oxford Down has a dark coloured face and legs with the whole of the body and legs coverded with a wool of a close texture which is a good length and fine quality. The fleece is the heaviest of all the down breeds and its long staple wool is used in hosiery, knitting yarns and felts.

We currently have the fleece from The Chiltern Open Air Museum at the mill being spun into Double Knit and 4ply.

We will advise you when it is ready via our News page and would add that 10% of all Oxford Down sales will go to the Chiltern Open Air Museum.
